DELL PowerEdge R350 Server

Dell PowerEdge R350 overview

Dell PowerEdge R350 is a single-socket 1U rack server for small and medium businesses, branch offices and compact infrastructure deployments. It uses Intel Xeon E-2300 or Intel Pentium processors with DDR4 memory, placing it above the most basic entry rack systems but below dual-socket Intel Xeon Scalable platforms.

The Dell R350 server is a practical option when a company needs a compact rack server with stronger SMB functionality than the R250. It is suitable for file services, domain services, backup, monitoring, small databases, simple business applications and light virtualization. It should not be positioned as a replacement for Dell PowerEdge R650 or other high-density enterprise compute nodes, but it can be a good fit where a small physical server must be easy to manage, service and integrate into an existing rack.

When to choose Dell PowerEdge R350

Choose Dell PowerEdge R350 when the R250 looks too limited but a dual-socket platform would be unnecessary. The R350 is well suited for a branch office that runs local authentication, file sharing, print services, monitoring, a small application server or a backup role. It can also support a small virtualization environment when VM count, memory needs and storage performance are kept realistic.

The Dell PowerEdge R350 server is useful for companies standardizing on rack-mounted hardware across multiple offices. A compact 1U system is easier to place in a small rack than a tower server, and it can be managed in a familiar Dell PowerEdge environment. For a small business, this can be a more structured choice than workstation-class hardware.

For database workloads, the R350 is appropriate for light local databases, not for large multi-user transactional systems. If a workload depends on many CPU cores, large RAM pools or high-throughput storage, the better comparison is Dell PowerEdge R450 or Dell PowerEdge R550.

Chassis and drive bay options

The Servermall page lists the Dell R350 8SFF configuration. SFF drive bays are useful when the server needs SSD or SAS storage in a compact 1U chassis.

Chassis option Best for Comment
Dell R350 8SFF SSD-based SMB workloads, small virtualization and compact file services SFF bays allow more 2.5-inch drives than basic 4LFF layouts and are better for performance-oriented SSD/SAS configurations.

Dell R350 8SFF is a good match when the server needs more local drive flexibility than a basic entry system. It can support mirrored boot, separate data volumes or a small SSD pool, depending on the selected controller. LFF capacity is not the focus of this page configuration, so backup or archive deployments that require large HDD capacity should be planned carefully.

Final drive compatibility depends on the selected backplane, storage controller and exact server configuration.

Recommended Dell PowerEdge R350 configurations by workload

Workload Recommended focus
Small business server Xeon E CPU, enough RAM for applications, mirrored SSD or RAID-protected storage.
Branch office infrastructure Reliable local storage, remote management, redundant PSU where available and clear backup policy.
Light virtualization More RAM, SSD storage and limited VM density; avoid sizing it like an enterprise cluster node.
File services Dell R350 8SFF with SSD/SAS or supported SATA drives, RAID controller and backup integration.
Light database Higher-clock Xeon E option, RAM for cache and low-latency SSDs where supported.
Monitoring / management node Moderate CPU, modest RAM, reliable boot storage and stable network connectivity.

The Dell R350 configuration should be selected around reliability and right-sizing. In many SMB cases, RAM and storage choice have more practical impact than choosing the highest CPU option.

How to choose CPU, RAM, RAID and storage

Intel Xeon E processors are suitable for smaller business workloads, branch servers, basic applications and light virtualization. Select a Xeon E CPU when the R350 will host multiple services or small VMs. Pentium can be considered for simpler roles, but it leaves less headroom. CPU and core count may affect software licensing for VMware, Windows Server, Microsoft SQL Server and other commercial platforms, so processor choice should be aligned with both performance and licensing.

RAM planning should start with the number of services or VMs. A domain controller or monitoring node may need modest memory, while small virtualization and databases benefit from a larger RAM allocation. For these workloads, RAM is often more valuable than a small increase in CPU frequency.

Hardware RAID is suitable for conventional server deployments with RAID1, RAID5 or RAID10 depending on drive count and risk tolerance. HBA/JBOD mode is mainly relevant when software such as ZFS or Proxmox/ZFS controls disks directly, but the R350 should be used carefully for software-defined storage because it is still an entry-level single-socket server. BOSS or boot SSD options, where available, can be used for the OS or hypervisor.

For storage, SFF SSDs provide better responsiveness than HDD-only layouts. HDDs may still be useful for low-cost capacity if supported. NVMe should not be assumed unless the exact configuration supports it.

Dell PowerEdge R350 vs related Dell models

Model When to consider
Dell PowerEdge R250 Choose R250 when the workload is simpler and a basic 1U rack server is enough.
Dell PowerEdge T350 Consider T350 when the same SMB role is needed in a tower format with more local LFF capacity.
Dell PowerEdge R450 Move to R450 when dual-socket Intel Xeon Scalable performance and more enterprise headroom are required.

Dell PowerEdge R350 is the stronger single-socket 1U SMB option, while R450 is the step into a different compute class.

New and refurbished Dell PowerEdge R350 servers

A refurbished Dell R350 can be a practical option for production when the hardware is tested, correctly configured and covered by warranty. It is especially relevant for branch offices and SMB infrastructure where predictable cost matters.

New units may be preferable when procurement policy requires new hardware or when multiple offices need the same standardized build. Servermall offers EU delivery and warranty options; depending on the offer, Dell R350 refurbished and new configurations may be available with a 5-year warranty. Confirm the condition, supported drive layout, PSU selection and delivery terms before ordering.

Summary: is Dell PowerEdge R350 the right server for your workload×

Dell PowerEdge R350 is a good fit for SMB and branch office infrastructure that needs more capability than a basic entry rack server but does not require dual-socket compute. It works well for file services, backup, domain control, monitoring, light applications and small virtualization. Compare it with R250 for lower entry cost, T350 for tower deployment or R450 for enterprise headroom. Before purchase, confirm CPU, RAM, storage, RAID/HBA, network, PSU and warranty requirements.
