HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 Server

HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 overview

HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 is a compact 1U, single-socket rack server for enterprise and edge workloads that need a balance of compute performance, storage flexibility, PCIe Gen5 expansion and optional GPU acceleration. As an HPE DL320 Gen11 1U rack server, it is based on 4th or 5th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, DDR5 Smart Memory and HPE iLO 6 management.

The HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 server is suitable for edge computing, virtualization, containers, distributed data solutions, databases, backup infrastructure, software-defined storage and selected GPU-accelerated workloads. It should be treated as a compact, workload-driven single-socket platform, not as a direct replacement for a dual-socket enterprise server. Compared with previous single-socket platforms, Gen11 brings a newer processor platform, DDR5 memory, PCIe Gen5 I/O, updated HPE management capabilities and broader modular configuration options.

When to choose HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11

Choose HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 when the workload needs a standard 1U single-socket enterprise platform with strong performance per socket and flexible local storage or accelerator options. It is a good fit for edge virtualization, compact private cloud nodes, container platforms, business applications, database servers, analytics systems, distributed storage nodes and infrastructure roles where compute, RAM, storage, network and power use must be balanced carefully.

Compared with a dual-socket 1U server such as HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen11, the HPE DL320 Gen11 focuses on single-socket economics, modular storage choices and selected GPU Dense configurations rather than maximum CPU and memory scale. This can be useful when rack density, licensing efficiency, edge deployment or a simpler processor topology matters more than dual-socket capacity.

The HPE DL320 Gen11 configuration should be validated carefully for processor generation, memory population, drive cage layout, storage controller, risers, NICs, power supplies, fans, heatsinks and cooling. This is especially important for 12LFF, NVMe, EDSFF and GPU Dense configurations. If the project requires a dual-socket Intel platform, compare with HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen11 or HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11; if the project requires AMD processors, compare with HPE ProLiant DL325 Gen11 or HPE ProLiant DL345 Gen11.

Chassis and drive bay options

HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 supports several chassis and drive bay layouts. The right option depends on whether the server is being configured for compact virtualization, high-density SSD storage, capacity-oriented HDD storage, NVMe performance, distributed data workloads or accelerator-heavy edge deployments.

Chassis option Best for Comment
HPE DL320 Gen11 4LFF Compact capacity-oriented workloads, edge infrastructure and general business applications Supports 4 LFF SAS/SATA drive bays. It is useful when a small number of 3.5-inch drives is enough and the server must remain compact.
HPE DL320 Gen11 8SFF / 8+2SFF Virtualization, databases, SSD-based workloads and mixed enterprise services Supports SFF SAS, SATA and NVMe options depending on the selected 8SFF Tri-Mode U.3 backplane, controller, cabling and optional 2SFF drive cage.
HPE DL320 Gen11 12LFF Backup repositories, archive storage, distributed data solutions and capacity-focused infrastructure Provides high local 3.5-inch drive density in a 1U system. Rack depth, cabling, controller mode, airflow and serviceability should be checked before ordering.
HPE DL320 Gen11 GPU Dense CTO Edge AI, computer vision, VDI graphics acceleration and selected inference workloads Designed for GPU-focused configurations. Final GPU support depends on the selected GPU model, enablement kit, power cables, risers, high-performance fans, heatsink and ambient temperature limits.
HPE DL320 Gen11 EDSFF and NVMe configurations High-performance flash storage and dense NVMe-oriented edge workloads EDSFF and U.3 NVMe support depends on the GPU CTO model or SFF drive cage, backplane, direct attach or retimer design, VROC/controller choice, cabling and cooling.

For capacity workloads, LFF configurations are usually the practical starting point. For latency-sensitive databases, virtualization datastores, container platforms and high-IO workloads, SFF SSD, U.3 NVMe or EDSFF NVMe configurations should be considered. NVMe and EDSFF support should not be assumed from the server model name alone; it depends on the exact backplane, drive cage, cabling, controller, enablement kit and CTO configuration.

Final drive compatibility depends on the selected chassis, backplane, storage controller, cables, risers, cooling configuration and HPE support matrix.

Recommended HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 configurations by workload

Workload Recommended focus
Virtualization / private cloud Balanced single-socket CPU configuration, sufficient DDR5 memory, SSD or NVMe storage where needed, redundant networking and clear limits for VM density and failover headroom.
VDI High RAM allocation, predictable CPU performance, fast boot and profile storage, and validated GPU Dense options when graphics acceleration is required.
Containers / Kubernetes Balanced CPU and RAM, reliable boot media, fast local SSD where needed and redundant network connectivity for cluster traffic.
Databases / data management Processor choice matched to licensing and query profile, enough RAM for cache, low-latency SSD or NVMe storage and protected storage design.
Backup / archive 4LFF or 12LFF chassis, capacity HDDs, moderate CPU/RAM and network throughput sized for backup windows and restore requirements.
Software-defined storage / HCI Drive layout, HBA/JBOD or controller mode, network bandwidth and CPU/RAM sized for the selected SDS platform and cluster-level redundancy model.
GPU-accelerated workloads GPU Dense CTO model, validated GPU type, power cables, enablement kit, high-performance fans, heatsink, cooling limits and memory sizing checked before purchase.
Mixed enterprise workloads Balanced CPU, RAM, storage and NIC choices, with headroom for maintenance, workload growth and edge or branch-office operating conditions.

The HPE DL320 Gen11 configuration should be chosen around the main reason for selecting a compact 1U single-socket Gen11 server: single-socket performance, DDR5 memory, PCIe Gen5 expansion, modular storage layouts, selected GPU support and practical deployment at the edge or in dense racks.

How to choose CPU, RAM, RAID and storage

HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 supports 4th and 5th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors depending on the selected server configuration. Higher core counts help virtualization, containers, VDI and multi-user services, while higher clock speed can matter for databases and applications that are sensitive to per-core performance. Processor choice should also account for software licensing, especially for VMware, Windows Server, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle and other commercial platforms.

Do not treat processor generation, memory speed and PCIe behavior as freely interchangeable. 5th Generation Intel Xeon configurations use different DDR5 memory options from 4th Generation Intel Xeon configurations, and selected processor choices can affect PCIe capability, cooling requirements and supported options. Processors with higher TDPs may require a performance heatsink and high-performance fan kit, so the final CPU choice should be confirmed together with power and cooling.

RAM planning should start with VM density, database cache requirements, container scheduling, failover design and future growth. HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 supports HPE DDR5 Smart Memory with 16 DIMM slots, 8 memory channels and up to 2 DIMMs per channel. Maximum memory capacity can reach up to 2 TB with 16 × 128 GB RDIMM in supported configurations. Memory speed depends on the processor, DIMM type and population rules, so the final memory layout should be validated before ordering.

Hardware RAID is appropriate for classic server deployments with protected local arrays. HBA, JBOD or software-controlled storage is usually preferred for ZFS, Ceph, VMware vSAN, Proxmox/ZFS and other software-defined storage platforms when the software layer manages disks directly. Intel VROC and HPE Gen11 storage controllers can be relevant depending on whether the build uses SATA, SAS, U.3 NVMe or EDSFF storage. HPE boot options such as NS204i-u, where available, can separate OS or hypervisor boot from the main data drives.

For storage, LFF HDDs are capacity-oriented and are suitable for backup, archive and distributed data services. SFF SSDs are better for application responsiveness and mixed virtualization workloads. NVMe and EDSFF options are better for latency-sensitive databases, high-IO virtualization, analytics and edge AI pipelines, but only when the exact chassis, backplane, drive cage, cabling and controller or direct-attach configuration support the required drive type.

HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 vs related HPE models

Model When to consider
HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen11 Consider DL20 Gen11 when the workload needs a simpler entry-level 1U server and lower CPU, RAM, storage and expansion scale is acceptable.
HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen11 Choose DL360 Gen11 when 1U density must be combined with dual-socket Intel Xeon scalability, higher memory capacity and broader enterprise expansion.
HPE ProLiant DL325 Gen11 Choose DL325 Gen11 when a 1U AMD EPYC platform is preferred for single-socket compute density, AMD-based standardization or workload-specific core and memory characteristics.
HPE ProLiant DL345 Gen11 Choose DL345 Gen11 when a single-socket AMD EPYC platform is required with more 2U space for capacity storage and storage-heavy configurations.
HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11 Choose DL380 Gen11 when the workload needs a 2U dual-socket Intel platform with more room for memory, drives, PCIe expansion, GPU options and long-term configuration flexibility.

HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 is the right reference point when the requirement is an Intel-based HPE Gen11 1U single-socket server with compact deployment, modular storage and selected GPU options. It should not be described as a smaller DL380 Gen11 or as a simple entry-level server, because its role is different: it is a workload-driven 1P platform for edge, distributed infrastructure and dense enterprise deployments.

Summary: is HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 the right server for your workload×

HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 is a compact 1U enterprise server for edge computing, virtualization, containers, databases, software-defined storage, backup, distributed data solutions and selected GPU-accelerated workloads. Choose it when you need an Intel Xeon-based HPE Gen11 single-socket platform with DDR5 memory, PCIe Gen5 expansion, flexible drive bay layouts, optional GPU Dense configurations and HPE management features. Consider DL360 Gen11 for 1U dual-socket Intel scalability, DL380 Gen11 for a 2U Intel platform with broader expansion, DL325 Gen11 for AMD EPYC-based 1U infrastructure or HPE ProLiant DL345 Gen11 when single-socket AMD and larger local storage are required. Before purchase, confirm CPU generation, RAM population, storage layout, RAID/HBA mode, network, risers, cooling, PSU, GPU and warranty requirements.
