HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 overview

HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 is a dense 1U, dual-socket rack server for enterprise workloads that need a strong balance of compute performance, memory capacity, storage flexibility and PCIe 3.0 expansion in a compact form factor. As an HPE DL360 Gen10 1U rack server, it is based on 1st or 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, HPE DDR4 Smart Memory, PCIe 3.0 expansion and HPE iLO 5 management.

The HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 server is suitable for virtualization, databases, containers, high-performance computing, VDI, business applications, cloud infrastructure, data management, software-defined storage, backup infrastructure and selected GPU-accelerated workloads. It should be treated as a flexible mainstream 1U enterprise platform, not as a narrow-purpose or entry-level server. Compared with later Gen11 platforms, DL360 Gen10 uses DDR4 memory and PCIe 3.0, so it is most relevant when proven compatibility, high rack density, enterprise management and acquisition cost matter more than DDR5, PCIe Gen5 or the newest processor generation.

When to choose HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10

Choose HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 when the workload needs a compact 1U dual-socket Intel Xeon platform with strong compute density, flexible memory options and practical storage choices. It is a good fit for virtualization clusters, private cloud nodes, container platforms, business applications, database servers, high-performance computing, VDI and infrastructure roles where compute, RAM, storage and network options must be balanced carefully.

Compared with a 2U server such as HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10, the HPE DL360 Gen10 gives higher rack density and a smaller physical footprint. This can be useful when compute density, standardized rack deployment and space efficiency matter more than maximum local drive capacity or broader PCIe expansion. Compared with a newer HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen11, the DL360 Gen10 is a proven DDR4-based platform and can be a more cost-efficient choice when Gen11 features are not required.

The HPE DL360 Gen10 configuration should be validated carefully for processor generation, memory population, drive cage layout, storage controller, risers, FlexibleLOM or stand-up NICs, power supplies, fans and cooling. This is especially important for 10SFF NVMe Premium, 8SFF with Universal Media Bay, rear drive, high-TDP CPU, GPU, HPE Persistent Memory and Network Choice configurations. If the project requires a more flexible 2U Intel platform, compare with HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10; if the project requires a newer DDR4 and PCIe Gen4 1U platform, compare with HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 Plus.

Chassis and drive bay options

HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 supports several chassis and drive bay layouts. The right option depends on whether the server is being configured for dense compute, balanced virtualization, low-latency NVMe storage, SSD-focused workloads, capacity-oriented LFF storage, VDI graphics or selected accelerator workloads.

For capacity-oriented workloads in a 1U footprint, 4LFF can be useful, but it should not be treated as a replacement for larger 2U storage-focused platforms.

Final drive compatibility depends on the selected chassis, backplane, storage controller, cables, risers, cooling configuration and HPE support matrix.

How to choose CPU, RAM, RAID and storage

HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 supports 1st and 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors depending on the selected server configuration. Higher core counts help virtualization, containers, VDI, HPC and multi-user workloads, while higher clock speed can matter for databases and applications sensitive to per-core performance. Processor choice should also account for software licensing, especially for VMware, Windows Server, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle and other commercial platforms.

Do not treat 1st Gen and 2nd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable configurations as freely interchangeable. HPE notes that field upgrades from 1st Generation processors to 2nd Generation processors are not supported on this platform. If a 2nd Gen Xeon build is required, confirm the processor generation at the time of purchase. “U” processors are supported only in single-socket configurations, and selected CPUs such as Xeon Gold 6250 and 6250L have restrictions with NVMe SSDs and the 10SFF Premium NVMe chassis.

RAM planning should start with VM density, database cache requirements, container scheduling, failover design and future growth. HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 supports HPE DDR4 Smart Memory with 24 DIMM slots, 12 DIMM slots per processor, 6 memory channels per processor and 2 DIMMs per channel. Maximum memory capacity can reach up to 3.0 TB with 24 × 128 GB LRDIMM, up to 1.54 TB with 24 × 64 GB RDIMM, or up to 6.0 TB with HPE Persistent Memory in supported 2nd Generation Intel Xeon configurations. RDIMM and LRDIMM memory cannot be mixed, and if only one processor is installed, only half of the DIMM slots are available.

HPE Smart Array S100i SR Gen10 software RAID can be used for SATA storage in UEFI mode, but it is off by default and must be enabled. The S100i supports Microsoft Windows Server only; for Linux, VMware or more demanding storage designs, a suitable hardware controller or another supported storage approach should be selected. HPE Smart Array E208 and P408/P816 controllers are appropriate when SAS support, hardware RAID, cache or a more traditional protected storage model is required. HBA or JBOD mode is usually preferred for ZFS, Ceph, VMware vSAN, Proxmox/ZFS and other software-defined storage platforms when the software layer manages disks directly.

For storage, SFF SSDs are suitable for application responsiveness, virtualization and database latency. NVMe configurations are better for high-IO and low-latency workloads, but they depend on the exact chassis, backplane and riser design. LFF HDDs are capacity-oriented and suitable for compact backup, file services and archive roles where a 1U form factor is required. Boot planning should be handled separately from data drives where possible, using supported NS204i-p NVMe, microSD, USB, M.2 SATA or controller-based boot designs according to the operating system and support matrix.
