Buy used HPE servers: ProLiant for your IT requirements
Used HPE ProLiant servers can expand existing infrastructure or provide a platform for virtualisation, databases and core business services. If you are looking to buy a used HP server, you will find many ProLiant models under the HPE brand, short for Hewlett Packard Enterprise. The full model name, generation and installed components are essential to choosing the right system.
Consider the ProLiant model and generation together
Names such as DL380 Gen9 and DL380 Gen10 identify different platform generations. Check the relevant HPE QuickSpecs for supported processors, memory configurations and expansion options. The model family alone is not enough to place an order or select replacement parts.
Even servers from the same generation can have different drive cages, backplanes and controllers. SFF typically refers to bays for 2.5-inch drives, while LFF refers to bays for 3.5-inch drives. These labels do not specify the supported interface or which drives are included.
Choose rack or tower hardware for your installation site
ProLiant DL systems are rack platforms, while the ML range includes tower systems. Our used rack servers provide a starting point for installations in existing server racks. Our used tower servers include freestanding systems for sites without a rack. For either form factor, check power, cooling and access for maintenance.
Match memory, controllers and HPE iLO to your requirements
- Memory: The DIMM type, processor configuration and memory population rules determine the available upgrade options.
- Storage: An HPE Smart Array controller must support the intended drives and your application's storage architecture.
- Remote management: HPE iLO supports hardware monitoring and administration. Available features depend on the server model, iLO version and licence.
- Software: Check support for your operating system or hypervisor version, as well as the availability of suitable drivers and firmware.
When purchasing several refurbished HPE servers, consistent configurations can be useful: standardised components simplify inventory management and maintenance. Identical model names alone do not guarantee identical configurations.

That depends on the quote. Refurbishment does not automatically include new drives. Ask for their condition to be confirmed explicitly. For used SSDs, write workload history and remaining write endurance help assess their condition.
There is no reliable universal remaining lifespan. Components, diagnostic results, operating conditions and intended use all matter. Also check spare parts availability and support for your software. A warranty does not replace checking these requirements.
Only if the model, components and software version are compatible. Check HPE's information and the software vendor's requirements, including controllers, network adapters, drivers and firmware. Successful installation is not proof of an officially supported configuration.
When its configuration and running costs suit the actual workload. Compare purchase price, electricity, maintenance and software licences over the planned service life. With per-core licensing, a high core count can increase software costs and reduce hardware savings.
