Buy used servers: the right hardware for your business
Used servers can reduce the upfront cost of building your own IT infrastructure. The key is to match processing power, memory and storage connectivity to your applications. Used, refurbished or reconditioned: what matters when buying×
A used server has been in service before. The terms “refurbished servers” and “reconditioned servers” describe equipment that has undergone refurbishment, but do not specify the extent of testing on their own. Servermall carries out diagnostics and load testing before dispatch. Refurbishment does not mean that every component is new. Ask for the condition of the drives, the included components and the warranty coverage to be recorded in your quote.
Choose the configuration to suit the workload
- Virtualisation: Allow enough CPU capacity and RAM for concurrently running virtual machines, with headroom for the host system and future growth.
- Databases and ERP: Consider performance per CPU core, memory requirements and storage latency.
- File services and backup: Balance usable storage capacity, network throughput and the available backup window.
- Development and testing: Choose a platform that supports your intended operating systems, hypervisors and testing tools.
A low base price is not necessarily the price of a system that is ready to use. Check whether the CPU, RAM, drives, controllers, power supplies and required licences are included.
Select the right form factor and manufacturer
Used rack servers are designed for installation in existing server racks. For individual sites without a rack, consider used tower servers. The form factor determines how the server is installed; the specific configuration determines its performance.

Calculate purchase and running costs together
Total costs include electricity, cooling, software and maintenance as well as hardware. An additional 100 watts of average power consumption adds 876 kWh per year when running continuously. At an assumed electricity price of €0.30 per kWh, that is €262.80 annually, excluding additional cooling. This example illustrates why the purchase price alone is not enough for a meaningful cost comparison.

Used describes previous service. Refurbished or reconditioned indicates that equipment has undergone refurbishment, but does not mean every component is new. The actual testing scope, condition and agreed configuration are what matter.
Check the exact configuration, drive condition, documented testing scope and warranty terms. Also establish whether required components are missing and whether your intended software still supports the offered hardware.
A fixed remaining lifespan cannot reliably be promised. It depends on components, workload and operating conditions. Spare parts availability and software support also matter for your planned service life. A warranty does not guarantee each component's lifespan.
When the complete configuration meets your requirements and has a lower total cost over the planned service life. Include electricity, cooling, software licences and maintenance alongside the purchase price. Compare equipment suitable for the same workload.
