HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11 overview
HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11 is a 4.5U, single-socket tower server with optional rack conversion for SMB, remote office and branch office workloads that need compute performance, storage flexibility, expandability and PCIe Gen5 support. It is based on 4th or 5th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, HPE DDR5 Smart Memory and HPE iLO 6 management.
The server is suitable for business applications, file and print services, small virtualization, backup infrastructure, security monitoring, branch services, light databases, internal LTO workflows and selected GPU workloads. Compared with previous ML110 generations, Gen11 brings DDR5, PCIe Gen5, NS204i-u boot options and improved storage flexibility.
When to choose HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11
Choose HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11 when the workload needs a tower server with enterprise management, single-socket economics and room for local storage. Compared with HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen11, it gives more processor scale, memory capacity, drive expansion, PCIe Gen5 expansion and GPU flexibility, while remaining smaller and simpler than HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11.
Validate processor generation, memory population, drive cages, storage controller, OCP/NIC cards, risers, power supplies, redundant fan kit, GPU and rack conversion before ordering. This is especially important for 16SFF, 8LFF, NS204i-u, internal LTO, high-speed networking and GPU configurations.
Chassis and drive bay options
HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11 supports several chassis and drive bay layouts for tower deployments. The right option depends on whether the server is being configured for local business services, small virtualization, backup, capacity storage, internal tape or light accelerator workloads.
| Chassis option | Best for | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| HPE ML110 Gen11 8SFF | SSD-based business applications and small virtualization | Supports 8 SFF SAS/SATA drives and can expand to 16 SFF with an additional cage in supported builds. |
| HPE ML110 Gen11 4LFF | Capacity storage, backup and file services | Starts with 4 LFF drives and can support an additional LFF or SFF cage depending on chassis and controller. |
| HPE ML110 Gen11 8LFF expanded configurations | Local backup repositories and archive data | Selected LFF builds can support up to 8 LFF drives; mixed SFF/LFF cages are supported with LFF chassis. |
| HPE ML110 Gen11 internal LTO configurations | Local tape backup and branch data protection | Internal LTO support is available in selected layouts and must be planned with drive cages and controller choice. |
| HPE ML110 Gen11 GPU-capable configurations | Light GPU acceleration, VDI graphics and edge analytics | Selected NVIDIA L4 or RTX options require correct riser, fan, power and cooling validation. |
For capacity workloads, LFF configurations are usually the practical starting point. For faster application response or small virtualization datastores, SFF SSD layouts should be considered. NS204i-u and onboard M.2 options can separate boot from data drives.
Final drive compatibility depends on the selected chassis, backplane or drive cage, storage controller, cabling, risers, cooling, power supplies and the HPE support matrix.
Recommended configurations by workload
| Workload | Recommended focus |
|---|---|
| Branch office / SMB services | Balanced CPU, RAM, local storage and remote management through HPE iLO. |
| File / print / POS | Protected local storage, embedded networking and simple serviceability. |
| Security monitoring | Capacity storage, network bandwidth for camera streams and enough CPU/RAM for recording software. |
| Databases / data management | CPU choice aligned with licensing, enough RAM for cache, low-latency SSD/NVMe and protected storage. |
| Backup / archive | Capacity-oriented chassis, HDDs, moderate CPU/RAM and network throughput sized for backup windows. |
| Software-defined storage / HCI | Drive layout, HBA/JBOD or controller mode, cache strategy and redundant networking. |
| Mixed enterprise workloads | Balanced CPU, RAM, storage and NIC choices with headroom for maintenance and growth. |
How to choose CPU, RAM, RAID and storage
ML110 Gen11 supports one 4th or 5th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor. More cores help small virtualization and consolidation; higher frequency helps business applications and databases.
DDR5 speed and capacity depend on CPU generation and population rules. The platform has 16 DIMM slots, 8 memory channels and up to 1.5 TB in supported 5th Gen configurations with 96 GB RDIMMs.
Intel VROC SATA/NVMe can be useful for selected boot and storage layouts, but OS and driver support must be checked. Hardware RAID is preferred when SAS or advanced RAID features are required.
LFF HDDs suit backup and file capacity. SFF SSDs suit application response and small virtualization. NS204i-u, onboard M.2 and internal LTO should be planned with controllers, fans and drive cages.
HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11 vs related HPE models
| Model | When to consider |
|---|---|
| HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen11 | Choose ML30 Gen11 for lower-cost entry tower SMB and POS workloads. |
| HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11 | Choose ML350 Gen11 when dual-socket tower scale and more expansion are required. |
| HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 | Choose DL320 Gen11 when a compact 1U rack server is preferred. |
| HPE Gen11 Servers | Consider the wider Gen11 portfolio for rack density, AMD EPYC or specialized layouts. |
| HPE MicroServer Gen10 Plus | Consider MicroServer Gen10 Plus when a smaller platform is enough. |
Summary: is HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11 the right server for your workload×
HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11 is a strong single-socket tower server for SMB, ROBO, business applications, file services, backup, light virtualization, security monitoring and selected GPU workloads.
