HPE Proliant DL380 Gen10 Server

HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 overview

HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 is a versatile 2U, dual-socket rack server for enterprise workloads that need balanced compute performance, memory capacity, storage flexibility and PCIe 3.0 expansion. As an HPE DL380 Gen10 2U rack server, it is based on 1st or 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, HPE DDR4 Smart Memory and HPE iLO 5 management.

The HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 server is suitable for virtualization, VDI, containers, databases, data management, software-defined storage, backup infrastructure, high-performance computing and selected GPU-accelerated workloads. It is a flexible mainstream enterprise platform, not an entry-level server. Compared with Gen11 systems, DL380 Gen10 uses DDR4 memory and PCIe 3.0, so it is relevant when proven compatibility, broad configuration flexibility and acquisition cost matter more than DDR5, PCIe Gen5 or the newest CPU generation.

When to choose HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10

Choose HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 when the workload needs a standard 2U dual-socket Intel Xeon platform with room for growth. It is a good fit for virtualization clusters, private cloud nodes, container platforms, business applications, databases, analytics, backup repositories and infrastructure roles where CPU, RAM, storage and network options must be balanced carefully.

Compared with a 1U server such as HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10, the HPE DL380 Gen10 provides more space for drives, PCIe cards, GPU options, airflow and serviceability. Compared with HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen10, it offers broader enterprise configuration flexibility and more expansion headroom.

The HPE DL380 Gen10 configuration should be validated for processor generation, memory population, drive layout, storage controller, risers, FlexibleLOM or stand-up NICs, power supplies, fans and cooling. This is especially important for 24SFF, 12LFF, 30SFF, expanded LFF, NVMe, rear-drive, mid-tray, high-TDP CPU, GPU, HPE Persistent Memory and Network Choice configurations. If the project needs a denser 1U Intel platform, compare with HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10; if it needs a newer DDR4 and PCIe Gen4 2U platform, compare with HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus.

Chassis and drive bay options

HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 supports several chassis and drive bay layouts. The right option depends on whether the server is configured for balanced virtualization, dense SSD storage, capacity HDD storage, NVMe performance, backup, software-defined storage or accelerator-heavy workloads.

Chassis option Best for Comment
HPE DL380 Gen10 8SFF Virtualization, business applications and mixed enterprise workloads Starts with 8 SFF bays and can be expanded with additional SFF or selected rear SFF options in supported configurations.
HPE DL380 Gen10 24SFF Dense 2.5-inch SSD, SAS/SATA and mixed storage Supports up to 24 front SFF drives and up to 30 SFF drives with optional rear SFF cages in selected builds.
HPE DL380 Gen10 8LFF Capacity workloads, file services and backup Useful when 3.5-inch HDD capacity is important, while keeping room for selected expansion options.
HPE DL380 Gen10 12LFF Backup repositories, archive storage and large local capacity Supports up to 12 front LFF drives and selected mid-tray or rear LFF expansion options.
HPE DL380 Gen10 NVMe configurations Low-latency storage, high-IO databases and performance virtualization Selected configurations support NVMe PCIe SSDs. Support depends on the exact chassis, backplane, risers and direct attach design.
HPE DL380 Gen10 GPU and accelerator configurations VDI graphics, AI inference, HPC and selected GPU workloads GPU support depends on chassis type, risers, power cables, fans, heatsinks, drive layout, processor TDP and cooling limits.

For capacity workloads, LFF configurations are usually the practical starting point. For latency-sensitive databases, virtualization datastores and high-IO workloads, SFF SSD or NVMe configurations should be considered. NVMe support should not be assumed from the model name alone; it depends on the exact chassis, backplane, drive cage, cabling, controller, risers and CTO configuration.

Final drive compatibility depends on the selected chassis, backplane, storage controller, cables, risers, cooling configuration and HPE support matrix.

Recommended HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 configurations by workload

Workload Recommended focus
Virtualization / private cloud Balanced dual-socket Intel Xeon configuration, enough DDR4 RAM for VM density, SSD or NVMe where needed, redundant networking and suitable controller choice.
VDI High RAM density, predictable CPU performance, fast storage and validated GPU options when graphics acceleration is required.
Containers / Kubernetes Balanced CPU and RAM, reliable boot media, local SSD where needed and network bandwidth sized for cluster traffic.
Databases / data management CPU choice matched to licensing and query profile, enough RAM for cache, low-latency SSD or NVMe and protected local arrays.
Backup / archive 8LFF or 12LFF chassis, capacity HDDs, moderate CPU/RAM and network throughput sized for backup and restore windows.
Software-defined storage / HCI Drive layout, hardware controller, HBA/JBOD strategy, network bandwidth and CPU/RAM sized for the selected SDS platform.
GPU-accelerated workloads Validated GPU model, risers, power cables, high-performance fans, heatsinks, cooling limits and memory sizing checked before purchase.
Mixed enterprise workloads Balanced CPU, RAM, storage and NIC choices, with headroom for failover, maintenance, backup and future growth.

The HPE DL380 Gen10 configuration should be chosen around the main reason for selecting a 2U enterprise platform: flexible local storage, strong dual-socket Intel Xeon compute, DDR4 memory capacity, PCIe 3.0 expansion, GPU options and proven HPE management.

How to choose CPU, RAM, RAID and storage

HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 supports 1st and 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors depending on the selected configuration. Higher core counts help virtualization, containers, VDI, storage services and multi-user workloads, while higher clock speed can matter for databases and applications sensitive to per-core performance. CPU choice should also account for software licensing, especially VMware, Windows Server, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle and other commercial platforms.

Do not treat 1st Gen and 2nd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable configurations as freely interchangeable. Field upgrades from 1st Generation processors to 2nd Generation processors are not supported. If a 2nd Gen Xeon build is required, confirm the processor generation at purchase. “U” processors are supported only in single-socket configurations, and selected high-frequency or high-TDP CPUs can have restrictions with NVMe, rear drives, GPUs or mid-tray options.

RAM planning should start with VM density, database cache requirements, container scheduling, storage services, failover design and future growth. HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 supports HPE DDR4 Smart Memory with 24 DIMM slots, 12 DIMM slots per CPU, 6 memory channels per CPU and 2 DIMMs per channel. Maximum memory can reach up to 3.0 TB with 24 × 128 GB LRDIMM, up to 1.54 TB with 24 × 64 GB RDIMM, or up to 6.0 TB with Intel Optane Persistent Memory for HPE in supported 2nd Gen Xeon configurations. RDIMM and LRDIMM cannot be mixed, and with one CPU only half of the DIMM slots are available.

HPE Smart Array S100i SR Gen10 software RAID can be used for SATA storage in UEFI mode, but it is off by default and must be enabled. It supports Windows only; for Linux, VMware or more demanding storage designs, use a suitable hardware controller or another supported storage approach. HPE Smart Array E208, P408, P816 and selected Broadcom MegaRAID controllers are suitable when SAS support, hardware RAID, cache, NVMe/SAS tri-mode capability or a protected storage model is required.

For storage, LFF HDDs are capacity-oriented and suitable for backup, archive and file services. SFF SSDs are better for application responsiveness and mixed virtualization workloads. NVMe is better for latency-sensitive databases, high-IO virtualization and analytics, but only when the exact chassis, backplane and CTO configuration support the required drive type. Boot planning should be separated from data drives where possible, using supported NS204i-p NVMe, microSD, USB, M.2 SATA, uFF or controller-based boot designs.

HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 vs related HPE models

Model When to consider
HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 Choose DL360 Gen10 when 1U density is more important than maximum local storage, PCIe expansion or GPU flexibility.
HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen10 Choose DL180 Gen10 when 2U storage capacity and cost efficiency are more important than the broader enterprise feature set of DL380 Gen10.
HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen10 Choose DL560 Gen10 when the workload needs a four-socket platform and the licensing model justifies higher CPU and memory scale in 2U.
HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus Consider DL380 Gen10 Plus when a newer DDR4-based Intel platform with PCIe Gen4 support is required.
HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11 Consider DL380 Gen11 when a newer 2U platform with DDR5 memory, PCIe Gen5 and newer Intel Xeon processors is required.

HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 is the right reference point when the requirement is an Intel-based HPE Gen10 2U enterprise server with broad configuration flexibility. It is not the same platform as DL380 Gen10 Plus or DL380 Gen11 and should not be described only as a previous version of a newer server.

New and refurbished HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 servers

A refurbished HPE DL380 Gen10 can be a practical production option when it is tested, correctly configured and supplied with warranty. It can reduce acquisition cost for virtualization, VDI, databases, private cloud, software-defined storage, backup repositories, GPU-supported workloads and mixed enterprise infrastructure while keeping the environment on a proven DDR4-based HPE platform.

New units may be preferable when procurement policy requires new hardware or when a specific configuration must be sourced for a standardized rollout, subject to availability. Servermall offers EU delivery and warranty options for HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 systems. Before ordering, confirm the exact condition, warranty terms, lead time, CPU generation, drive layout, storage controller, network cards, power supplies, rail kit and configuration details in the quote.

Summary: is HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 the right server for your workload×
