HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen10 overview
HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen10 is a flexible 4U, dual-socket tower server with rack conversion capability for SMB, remote office, branch office and enterprise workloads that need compute performance, memory capacity, local storage flexibility and PCIe 3.0 expansion. As an HPE ML350 Gen10 tower server, it is based on 1st or 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, HPE DDR4 Smart Memory and HPE iLO 5 management.
The HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen10 server is suitable for virtualization, VDI, containers, databases, file services, software-defined storage, backup, high-performance computing and selected GPU workloads. It is a flexible enterprise tower platform, not an entry-level office server. Compared with Gen11 platforms, ML350 Gen10 uses DDR4 memory and PCIe 3.0, so it is relevant when proven compatibility, tower deployment and acquisition cost matter more than DDR5 or PCIe Gen5.
When to choose HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen10
Choose HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen10 when the workload needs a tower server with dual-socket Intel Xeon compute, local storage and room for expansion. It is a good fit for growing SMBs, branch offices, virtualization, business applications, databases, backup repositories and infrastructure roles where CPU, RAM, storage and network must be balanced.
Compared with a smaller tower server such as HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen10, the HPE ML350 Gen10 provides more drive bays, PCIe slots, GPU options, redundant cooling and second CPU expansion. Compared with a rack server such as HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10, it is useful when tower deployment, local service access or later rack conversion matters.
The HPE ML350 Gen10 configuration should be validated for processor generation, memory population, drive cages, controller, PCIe cards, power, fans, rack conversion and cooling. This is especially important for 24SFF, 12LFF, mixed SFF/LFF, NVMe Express Bay, internal LTO/RDX, 2P, high-TDP CPU and GPU configurations. For 2U rack deployment, compare with HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10; for a newer tower, compare with HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11.
Chassis and drive bay options
HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen10 supports several tower and rack-convertible chassis layouts. The right option depends on virtualization, SSD storage, HDD capacity, NVMe performance, local backup media or GPU-heavy workloads.
| Chassis option | Best for | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| HPE ML350 Gen10 8SFF | Virtualization, business applications and SSD workloads | Starts with 8 SFF hot-plug SAS/SATA bays and can be expanded to 16 or 24 SFF drives. One 8SFF NVMe Express Bay can be installed in Box 2. |
| HPE ML350 Gen10 24SFF | Dense 2.5-inch SAS/SATA SSD storage | Uses up to three 8SFF drive cages. A 24SFF field upgrade requires the redundant fan cage kit plus validated controller, cabling and cooling. |
| HPE ML350 Gen10 8LFF | File services, backup, archive and capacity workloads | Useful when 3.5-inch HDD capacity is important and the project does not require the maximum 12LFF layout. |
| HPE ML350 Gen10 12LFF | Large local capacity, backup repositories and archive storage | Can scale to 12 LFF drives, up to 240 TB with 12 × 20 TB SAS or SATA HDDs in supported configurations. |
| HPE ML350 Gen10 NVMe Express Bay | Low-latency storage, high-IO databases and performance virtualization | The SFF chassis can support one 8SFF NVMe Express Bay with up to 8 NVMe PCIe SSDs when required risers, cables and fan kit are used. |
| HPE ML350 Gen10 media bay and GPU configurations | Internal LTO/RDX, VDI graphics, AI inference, rendering and HPC | Supports up to two half-height media devices, one slimline DVD and NVIDIA GPUs. Support depends on layout, fans, power, risers and cooling. |
For application responsiveness, virtualization datastores and database latency, SFF SSD or NVMe configurations should be considered. NVMe support depends on the SFF chassis, Box 2 layout, risers, cabling and cooling.
Final drive compatibility depends on chassis, drive cages, controller, cables, PCIe cards, fans, power supplies and HPE support matrix.
Recommended HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen10 configurations by workload
| Workload | Recommended focus |
|---|---|
| Virtualization / private cloud | Balanced dual-socket Intel Xeon, enough DDR4 RAM for VM density, SSD or NVMe where needed, redundant networking and suitable controller choice. |
| VDI | High RAM density, predictable CPU performance, fast storage and validated GPU options when graphics acceleration is required. |
| Containers / Kubernetes | Balanced CPU and RAM, reliable boot media, local SSD where needed and network bandwidth sized for cluster traffic. |
| Databases / data management | CPU matched to licensing and query profile, enough RAM for cache, low-latency SSD or NVMe and protected local arrays. |
| Backup / archive | 4LFF, 12LFF or internal LTO/RDX-focused configuration, capacity HDDs and network throughput sized for backup and restore windows. |
| Software-defined storage / HCI | Drive layout, hardware controller, HBA/JBOD strategy, network bandwidth and CPU/RAM sized for the selected SDS platform. |
| GPU-accelerated workloads | Validated GPU model, risers, power cables, redundant fan cage kit, thermal settings and memory sizing checked before purchase. |
| Mixed enterprise workloads | Balanced CPU, RAM, storage and NIC choices, with headroom for failover, maintenance, backup and growth. |
The HPE ML350 Gen10 configuration should be chosen around: flexible local storage, dual-socket Intel Xeon compute, DDR4 memory, PCIe 3.0 expansion, GPU options, media bay support and optional rack conversion.
How to choose CPU, RAM, RAID and storage
HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen10 supports 1st and 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. More cores help virtualization, containers, VDI and multi-user services, while higher clock speed can matter for databases. Field upgrades from 1st Gen to 2nd Gen processors are not supported. “U” processors are single-socket only, and selected high-frequency CPUs require specific thermal settings.
RAM planning should start with VM density, database cache and growth. ML350 Gen10 supports 24 DIMM slots, 12 per processor, 6 memory channels per processor and 2 DIMMs per channel. Maximum memory is up to 3 TB with 24 × 128 GB LRDIMM or up to 1.5 TB with 24 × 64 GB RDIMM. RDIMM and LRDIMM cannot be mixed, and with one CPU only half of the DIMM slots are available.
HPE Smart Array S100i SR Gen10 software RAID supports SATA RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 in UEFI mode, but it is disabled by default and supports Windows only. For Linux, VMware, SAS storage, performance RAID or protected arrays, use a Smart Array E208, P408, P816 or P824 controller. Performance RAID requires a Smart Storage Battery or Hybrid Capacitor.
For storage, LFF HDDs are capacity-oriented, SFF SSDs are better for application responsiveness, and NVMe is best for low-latency workloads when the SFF chassis, NVMe Express Bay, risers, cables and redundant fan kit are selected. Boot media should be planned separately where possible using microSD, USB, M.2 SATA, NS204i-p NVMe or controller-based options.
HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen10 vs related HPE models
| Model | When to consider |
|---|---|
| HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen10 | Choose ML110 Gen10 when a smaller single-socket tower server is enough and lower cost matters more than dual-socket scale. |
| HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 | Choose DL380 Gen10 when a 2U rack server is preferred for data center standardization and rack density. |
| HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 | Choose DL360 Gen10 when 1U rack density is more important than tower deployment or maximum local expansion. |
| HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11 | Consider ML350 Gen11 when a newer tower platform with DDR5 memory, PCIe Gen5 and newer Intel Xeon processors is required. |
| HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus | Consider DL380 Gen10 Plus when a newer DDR4-based rack platform with PCIe Gen4 support is preferred. |
HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen10 is the right reference point when the requirement is an Intel-based HPE Gen10 dual-socket tower server with strong local expansion. It is not the same platform as ML350 Gen11 and should not be described only as a previous version of a newer tower server.
New and refurbished HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen10 servers
A refurbished HPE ML350 Gen10 can be a practical production option when it is tested, correctly configured and supplied with warranty. It can reduce acquisition cost for virtualization, file services, backup, business applications, storage workloads, GPU-supported workloads and branch infrastructure.
New units may be preferable when procurement policy requires new hardware or when a specific configuration is needed for a standardized rollout. Servermall offers EU delivery and warranty options.
