Used rack servers for server rooms and data centres
Used rack servers provide computing power in a chassis designed for a server rack. They can support virtualisation, databases and central services, or serve as additional cluster nodes. Selection depends on application performance as well as the available space, power supply and cooling at the installation site. A refurbished rack server should fit your operating environment and leave room for planned upgrades.
1U or 2U: which chassis height fits your rack×
A 1U server occupies one rack unit; a 2U server occupies two. Compact systems save rack space, while taller chassis can offer more room for drives and expansion cards. The actual options depend on the model and chassis variant. Height alone does not determine performance or noise levels.
- Installation depth: Allow space for connectors, cables and the required clearance as well as the chassis itself.
- Mounting: Check that the rails are compatible with both the server and the rack, and verify the load rating.
- Power: Ensure that power supplies, plugs and power distribution are compatible. Separate power paths also require appropriately designed upstream electrical circuits.
- Cooling: Keep the intended airflow paths clear and plan heat removal for the hardware you will actually install.
Plan drive bays and network connectivity
The number of drive bays does not automatically tell you the usable storage capacity or supported interfaces. The backplane, controller and cabling also determine which drives can be installed. When assessing reconditioned rack servers, check the drive carriers, available PCIe slots and required network adapters too.
A virtualisation host needs a balance of processing power, RAM and I/O bandwidth. A fast SSD cannot compensate for a slow connection to external storage. When adding a cluster node, you must also meet the compatibility requirements of the hypervisor and your existing infrastructure.
Integrate Dell or HPE into your existing environment
Our used Dell servers include PowerEdge platforms, while our used HPE servers include ProLiant systems. A familiar platform can simplify spare parts management and administration. Compatibility still needs to be checked for the specific model.

Alongside the technical configuration, consider the chassis, drive bays, connectors, fans and power supplies. Ask about documented checks and any known defects. Cosmetic wear alone does not reliably indicate the equipment's technical condition.
This depends on the specific quote. Ask for compatible rails, drive carriers, power supplies and required cables to be listed explicitly. Missing mounting hardware can add costs and delay installation. The model name alone does not describe the included equipment.
Not necessarily. Compare electricity, cooling, software licences and maintenance under similar workloads. Higher running costs can offset a low purchase price. Assess the complete configuration over the planned service life.
Not automatically. Noise still depends on the model, fans, drives and workload. Ask about fan condition and compare the manufacturer's acoustic specifications for a similar configuration. Refurbished does not mean low-noise.
Not necessarily. Processors, RAM, backplanes, controllers and network adapters may differ. If you need consistent cluster nodes or replacement systems, specify the configuration of each unit explicitly. Matching model names do not guarantee matching components.
