HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus overview
HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus is a versatile 2U, dual-socket rack server for enterprise workloads that need strong compute performance, large DDR4 memory capacity, PCIe Gen4 expansion and flexible SFF or LFF storage. As an HPE DL380 Gen10 Plus 2U rack server, it is based on 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, HPE DDR4 Smart Memory and HPE iLO 5 management.
The HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus server is suitable for virtualization, VDI, containers, databases, data management, software-defined storage, backup infrastructure, cloud platforms, high-performance computing and selected GPU-accelerated workloads. It is a flexible mainstream enterprise platform, not an entry-level rack server. Compared with DL380 Gen10, Gen10 Plus brings 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors, PCIe 4.0 I/O, higher DDR4 memory scale, OCP 3.0 networking options and stronger NVMe support.
When to choose HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus
Choose HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus when the workload needs a standard 2U dual-socket Intel platform with room for storage, PCIe cards, memory growth and long-term serviceability. It is a good fit for virtualization clusters, private cloud nodes, container platforms, business applications, databases, analytics, backup repositories, VDI and infrastructure roles where CPU, RAM, storage and network options must be balanced carefully.
Compared with a 1U server such as HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 Plus, the HPE DL380 Gen10 Plus provides more physical space for drives, PCIe cards, GPU options, airflow and service access. Compared with HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10, it is better when PCIe Gen4, 3rd Gen Intel Xeon platform features, higher memory scale or Gen10 Plus NVMe options are required.
The HPE DL380 Gen10 Plus configuration should be validated for processor choice, memory population, chassis type, drive cage layout, storage controller, risers, OCP or stand-up NICs, power supplies, fans and cooling. This is especially important for 24SFF, 12LFF, expanded SFF/LFF, U.2/U.3 NVMe, rear drives, mid-tray, high-TDP CPU, GPU, Intel Persistent Memory, 100/200GbE, InfiniBand and tri-mode storage configurations. If the project requires a newer DDR5 platform, compare with HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11; if it requires AMD EPYC, compare with HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen10 Plus.
Chassis and drive bay options
HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus supports several 2U chassis and drive bay layouts. The right option depends on whether the server is configured for balanced virtualization, dense SSD storage, capacity HDD storage, NVMe performance, backup, software-defined storage or GPU-heavy workloads.
| Chassis option | Best for | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| HPE DL380 Gen10 Plus 8SFF | Virtualization, business applications, databases and mixed enterprise workloads | Starts with 8 SFF bays and can be expanded with additional SFF, U.2 NVMe, U.3 tri-mode, Universal Media Bay, mid-tray or rear SFF options in supported configurations. |
| HPE DL380 Gen10 Plus 24SFF | Dense 2.5-inch SAS/SATA SSD storage, NVMe and mixed storage | Supports up to 24 front SFF drives and can scale with optional mid-tray and rear SFF options, up to 38 SFF drives in supported configurations. |
| HPE DL380 Gen10 Plus 8LFF | Capacity workloads, file services, backup and archive | Includes Universal Media Bay and supports additional front SFF, optional 8SFF or 4LFF mid-tray, and selected rear LFF or SFF drive options. |
| HPE DL380 Gen10 Plus 12LFF | Large local capacity, backup repositories and archive storage | Supports 12 front LFF drives and can expand with optional 4LFF mid-tray and rear LFF drive cages, up to 20 LFF drives in supported builds. |
| HPE DL380 Gen10 Plus U.2 / U.3 NVMe configurations | Low-latency databases, high-IO virtualization and analytics | Selected SFF configurations support U.2 NVMe direct attach or U.3 tri-mode designs. Support depends on backplane, risers, cables, controller and fan kit. |
| HPE DL380 Gen10 Plus GPU and high-speed networking configurations | VDI graphics, AI inference, HPC, 100/200GbE and InfiniBand | Selected NVIDIA GPU and accelerator options are supported. GPU, high-speed Ethernet and InfiniBand builds require careful validation of risers, power, fans, heatsinks, drive layout and inlet temperature. |
For capacity workloads, LFF configurations are usually the practical starting point. For application responsiveness, virtualization datastores and databases, SFF SSD or NVMe configurations should be considered. NVMe support should not be assumed from the model name alone; it depends on the exact chassis, backplane, drive cage, cabling, controller, risers and CTO configuration.
Final drive compatibility depends on chassis, backplane, drive cage, controller, cables, risers, fan kit, power supplies and HPE support matrix.
Recommended HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus configurations by workload
| Workload | Recommended focus |
|---|---|
| Virtualization / private cloud | Balanced dual-socket Intel Xeon configuration, large DDR4 RAM pool, SSD or NVMe where needed, redundant networking and suitable controller choice. |
| VDI | High RAM density, predictable CPU performance, fast storage and validated GPU options where graphics acceleration is required. |
| Containers / Kubernetes | Balanced CPU and RAM, reliable boot media, local SSD where needed and network bandwidth sized for cluster traffic. |
| Databases / data management | CPU matched to licensing and query profile, enough RAM for cache, low-latency SSD or NVMe and protected local arrays. |
| Backup / archive | 8LFF or 12LFF chassis, capacity HDDs, moderate CPU/RAM and network throughput sized for backup and restore windows. |
| Software-defined storage / HCI | Drive layout, tri-mode controller, HBA/JBOD strategy, network bandwidth and CPU/RAM sized for the selected SDS platform. |
| GPU-accelerated workloads | Validated GPU model, risers, power cables, high-performance fans, heatsinks, cooling limits and memory sizing checked before purchase. |
| Mixed enterprise workloads | Balanced CPU, RAM, storage and NIC choices, with headroom for failover, maintenance, backup and growth. |
The HPE DL380 Gen10 Plus configuration should be chosen around the main reason for selecting this 2U enterprise platform: flexible local storage, dual-socket Intel Xeon compute, DDR4 memory capacity, PCIe Gen4 expansion, GPU options, high-speed networking and proven HPE management.
How to choose CPU, RAM, RAID and storage
HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus supports up to two 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors with up to 40 cores per CPU. Higher core counts help virtualization, containers, VDI and multi-user services, while higher clock speed can matter for databases and latency-sensitive applications. “U” processors are single-socket only, and processors with TDP of 150W or higher require a high-performance heatsink.
RAM planning should start with VM density, database cache, container scheduling and future growth. DL380 Gen10 Plus supports 32 DIMM slots, 16 per processor, 8 memory channels per processor and 2 DIMMs per channel. Maximum memory is up to 8 TB with 32 × 256 GB LRDIMM or up to 2 TB with 32 × 64 GB RDIMM. RDIMM and LRDIMM cannot be mixed, and with one CPU only half of the DIMM slots are available.
HPE Smart Storage SR100i Gen10 Plus software RAID works in UEFI mode, is disabled by default and supports Windows only. For Linux, VMware, SAS storage, larger arrays, performance RAID or NVMe/SAS/SATA tri-mode designs, use supported HPE Smart Array, MegaRAID or SmartRAID controllers. Intel VROC can be used for selected SATA or NVMe RAID scenarios, but it requires correct platform, UEFI and licensing validation.
For storage, LFF HDDs are capacity-oriented, SFF SSDs are better for application responsiveness, and U.2/U.3 NVMe is best for low-latency workloads when the selected chassis, backplane, risers, cables and fans support it. Boot media can be separated with NS204i-p NVMe, microSD, USB, M.2 SATA, uFF or controller-based options where supported.
HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus vs related HPE models
| Model | When to consider |
|---|---|
| HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 Plus | Choose DL360 Gen10 Plus when 1U density is more important than maximum local storage, GPU flexibility or 2U serviceability. |
| HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 | Choose DL380 Gen10 when a previous-generation DDR4 and PCIe 3.0 platform is sufficient and acquisition cost is the main priority. |
| HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen10 | Choose DL560 Gen10 when the workload needs a four-socket platform and the licensing model justifies higher CPU and memory scale in 2U. |
| HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen10 Plus | Choose DL385 Gen10 Plus when a dual-socket AMD EPYC 2U platform is preferred for AMD-based standardization. |
| HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11 | Consider DL380 Gen11 when a newer 2U platform with DDR5 memory, PCIe Gen5 and newer Intel Xeon processors is required. |
HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus is the right reference point when the requirement is an Intel-based HPE Gen10 Plus 2U enterprise server with PCIe Gen4, high DDR4 memory scale and broad storage flexibility. It is not the same platform as DL380 Gen10 and should not be described as a minor refresh only.
