U.3 Tri-Mode drive support: Supported U.3 Tri-Mode backplanes can carry SAS, SATA, and U.3 NVMe drives. The exact drive set depends on the selected backplane, controller or direct-attach path, cabling, firmware, and HPE configuration rules.

Backplane-specific direct attach: An x1 U.3 path can provide direct-attached SATA in supported configurations, while x4 U.3 direct attach is used for NVMe-oriented layouts. Controller-based builds add SAS support and RAID according to the required HPE cable kit.

Optional expansion to 10 SFF: An additional 2SFF U.3 cage can raise the front drive count from eight to ten. This option can replace the optical-media choice and requires the correct backplane, controller or direct-attach path, and cooling selection.
