HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 Plus overview
HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 Plus is a dense 1U, dual-socket rack server for enterprise workloads that need compute performance, memory capacity, PCIe Gen4 expansion and flexible SFF or LFF storage in a compact form factor. As an HPE DL360 Gen10 Plus 1U rack server, it is based on 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, HPE DDR4 Smart Memory and HPE iLO 5 management.
The HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 Plus server is suitable for virtualization, VDI, containers, databases, cloud infrastructure, data management, high-performance computing, software-defined storage, backup infrastructure and selected GPU-accelerated workloads. It is a high-density enterprise platform, not an entry-level rack server. Compared with DL360 Gen10, Gen10 Plus brings 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors, PCIe 4.0 I/O, higher DDR4 memory scale, OCP 3.0 networking options and stronger NVMe support.
When to choose HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 Plus
Choose HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 Plus when the workload needs a compact 1U dual-socket Intel platform with high compute density, PCIe Gen4 expansion and strong memory capacity. It is a good fit for virtualization clusters, private cloud nodes, container platforms, business applications, databases, VDI, HPC and infrastructure roles where CPU, RAM, storage and network options must be balanced carefully.
Compared with a 2U server such as HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus, the HPE DL360 Gen10 Plus gives higher rack density and a smaller physical footprint. This is useful when compute density and standardized rack deployment matter more than maximum local drive capacity. Compared with HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10, it is better when PCIe Gen4, Gen10 Plus storage options and newer Intel Xeon platform features are required.
The HPE DL360 Gen10 Plus configuration should be validated for processor choice, memory population, drive backplane, storage controller, risers, OCP or stand-up NICs, power supplies, fans and cooling. This is especially important for 8SFF U.2/U.3 NVMe, 8SFF + 2SFF, 4LFF, high-TDP CPU, 100GbE/200GbE networking, InfiniBand, GPU and Intel Persistent Memory configurations. If the project requires more local storage, compare with HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus; if it requires a newer DDR5 platform, compare with HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen11.
Chassis and drive bay options
HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 Plus supports several 1U chassis and drive bay layouts. The right option depends on virtualization, dense compute, SSD storage, NVMe performance, compact HDD capacity, VDI graphics or high-speed networking requirements.
| Chassis option | Best for | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| HPE DL360 Gen10 Plus 8SFF | Virtualization, business applications, databases and SSD-focused workloads | Supports 8 SFF bays with selectable SAS/SATA, U.3 tri-mode or U.2 NVMe backplanes. It is the most flexible general-purpose DL360 Gen10 Plus layout. |
| HPE DL360 Gen10 Plus 8SFF + 2SFF | Higher SFF density, boot separation, cache, logs and compact SSD storage | The Universal Media Bay can add 2 SFF SAS/SATA, U.3 tri-mode or U.2 NVMe bays in supported configurations, increasing the front drive count to 10 SFF. |
| HPE DL360 Gen10 Plus 4LFF | Compact capacity workloads, branch storage, backup and file services | Supports 4 LFF SAS/SATA bays. It is useful when 3.5-inch HDD capacity is needed in a 1U server, but capacity is still more limited than in 2U LFF platforms. |
| HPE DL360 Gen10 Plus U.3 tri-mode configurations | Mixed SAS, SATA and NVMe storage with Gen10 Plus controller flexibility | Selected U.3 backplanes support SAS, SATA and NVMe drives. Compatibility depends on the selected backplane, tri-mode controller, cables and high-performance fan kit. |
| HPE DL360 Gen10 Plus U.2 NVMe configurations | Low-latency storage, high-IO databases and performance virtualization | Selected SFF configurations support U.2 NVMe direct attach or controller-based designs. NVMe drives require the correct backplane, risers, cables and high-performance fans. |
| HPE DL360 Gen10 Plus GPU and high-speed networking configurations | VDI graphics, AI inference, HPC acceleration, 100/200GbE and InfiniBand | Selected NVIDIA L4 and NVIDIA A2 accelerator configurations are supported. GPU, 100GbE, 200GbE and InfiniBand options require careful riser, power, cooling and inlet temperature validation. |
For balanced enterprise workloads, 8SFF configurations are usually the practical starting point. For latency-sensitive databases, virtualization datastores and high-IO workloads, U.2 or U.3 NVMe should be considered. For compact capacity workloads, 4LFF can be useful, but it should not be treated as a replacement for a 2U storage-focused platform.
Final drive compatibility depends on chassis, backplane, drive cage, controller, cables, risers, fan kit, power supplies and HPE support matrix.
Recommended HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 Plus configurations by workload
| Workload | Recommended focus |
|---|---|
| Virtualization / private cloud | Balanced dual-socket Intel Xeon configuration, enough DDR4 RAM for VM density, SSD or NVMe where needed, redundant networking and suitable controller choice. |
| VDI | High RAM density, predictable CPU performance, fast storage and validated GPU options when graphics acceleration is required. |
| Containers / Kubernetes | Balanced CPU and RAM, reliable boot media, local SSD where needed and network bandwidth sized for cluster traffic. |
| Databases / data management | CPU matched to licensing and query profile, enough RAM for cache, low-latency SSD or NVMe and protected local arrays. |
| High-performance computing | High-core or high-frequency Intel Xeon CPUs, balanced memory population, PCIe Gen4 networking and validated accelerator options. |
| Backup / compact storage | 4LFF for HDD capacity or 8SFF/10SFF for SSD repositories, with network throughput sized for backup and restore windows. |
| Software-defined storage / HCI | Drive layout, tri-mode controller, HBA/JBOD strategy, network bandwidth and CPU/RAM sized for the selected SDS platform. |
| Mixed enterprise workloads | Balanced CPU, RAM, storage and NIC choices, with headroom for failover, maintenance, backup and growth. |
The HPE DL360 Gen10 Plus configuration should be chosen around the main reason for selecting this 1U enterprise platform: high rack density, dual-socket Intel Xeon compute, DDR4 memory capacity, PCIe Gen4 expansion, flexible SFF/LFF/NVMe storage and proven HPE management.
How to choose CPU, RAM, RAID and storage
HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 Plus supports up to two 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors with up to 40 cores per CPU. More cores help virtualization, containers, VDI and multi-user services, while higher clock speed can matter for databases and latency-sensitive applications. “U” processors are single-socket only. CPUs with TDP of 150W or higher require a high-performance heatsink, and CPUs of 205W or higher require the high-performance fan kit.
RAM planning should start with VM density, database cache, container scheduling and future growth. DL360 Gen10 Plus supports 32 DIMM slots, 16 per processor, 8 memory channels per processor and 2 DIMMs per channel. Maximum memory is up to 8 TB with 32 × 256 GB LRDIMM, up to 2 TB with 32 × 64 GB RDIMM, or up to 8 TB with Intel Persistent Memory 200 Series for HPE in supported configurations. RDIMM and LRDIMM cannot be mixed.
HPE Smart Storage SR100i Gen10 Plus software RAID supports selected SATA and limited NVMe layouts in UEFI mode, but it is off by default and supports Microsoft Windows Server only. Intel VROC SATA supports RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 for SATA storage with Windows and Linux support. Intel VROC NVMe supports RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 for direct-attached NVMe SSDs and supports Windows, Linux and VMware, but it requires UEFI mode and licensing.
For SAS storage, larger arrays, performance RAID or tri-mode NVMe/SAS/SATA designs, use supported HPE Smart Array, MegaRAID or SmartRAID controllers. For storage, LFF HDDs are capacity-oriented, SFF SSDs are better for application responsiveness, and U.2/U.3 NVMe is best for low-latency workloads when the selected chassis, backplane, risers, cables and fans support it. Boot media can be separated with NS204i-r, NS204i-p NVMe, microSD, USB, M.2 SATA or controller-based options where supported.
