HPE ProLiant Compute DL320 Gen12 overview
HPE ProLiant Compute DL320 Gen12 is a right-sized 1U, single-socket rack server for edge, cloud-native, Infrastructure-as-a-Service and general-purpose workloads that need strong compute performance, DDR5 memory, PCIe Gen5 I/O and flexible local storage. As an HPE DL320 Gen12 1U rack server, it is based on Intel Xeon 6 processors, HPE DDR5 Smart Memory and HPE iLO 7 management on a DC-SCM module.
The HPE ProLiant Compute DL320 Gen12 server is suitable for edge computing, virtualization, containers, databases, IaaS nodes, cloud-native applications, software-defined storage, backup infrastructure, high-speed networking and selected GPU-accelerated workloads. It should be treated as an efficient single-socket platform, not as a dual-socket replacement. Compared with previous DL320 generations, Gen12 brings Intel Xeon 6 processor options, DDR5 memory up to 6400 MT/s, PCIe Gen5, iLO 7, OCP 3.0 flexibility, EDSFF NVMe options and updated HPE management capabilities.
When to choose HPE ProLiant Compute DL320 Gen12
Choose HPE ProLiant Compute DL320 Gen12 when the workload needs a compact 1U single-socket server with high CPU core density, strong I/O capability and lower platform complexity than a dual-socket system. It is a good fit for edge sites, branch infrastructure, cloud-native deployments, virtualized workloads, container platforms, IaaS nodes, databases, analytics and general-purpose infrastructure roles where CPU, RAM, storage and network options must be balanced carefully.
Compared with a dual-socket 1U server such as HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen11, the HPE DL320 Gen12 is more right-sized for workloads where one Intel Xeon 6 processor provides enough compute. Compared with a 2U platform such as HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11, it uses less rack space and can be a better fit for edge and compact deployments where maximum local expansion is not the main requirement.
The HPE DL320 Gen12 configuration should be validated carefully for processor type, memory population, chassis type, drive cage layout, backplane, storage controller, risers, OCP or PCIe networking, power supplies, fans and cooling. This is especially important for 20 EDSFF, 12LFF, U.2/U.3 NVMe, front OCP, NS204i-u boot, GPU, high-speed Ethernet, InfiniBand and liquid-cooling configurations. If the project requires more 2U storage flexibility, compare with HPE ProLiant DL345 Gen11; if it requires a broader Intel 2U enterprise platform, compare with HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11.
Chassis and drive bay options
HPE ProLiant Compute DL320 Gen12 supports several 1U chassis and drive bay layouts. The right option depends on whether the server is being configured for balanced virtualization, edge workloads, dense SSD storage, capacity-oriented HDD storage, NVMe performance, high-speed networking or GPU-accelerated workloads.
| Chassis option | Best for | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| HPE DL320 Gen12 8SFF | Virtualization, business applications, databases and SSD-focused workloads | Supports 8 SFF drive bays with SAS, SATA or NVMe options depending on the selected backplane and controller. It can be expanded to 10 SFF with an optional 8+2 SFF cage. |
| HPE DL320 Gen12 SFF / EDSFF | High-density NVMe storage, flash-oriented workloads and compact high-IO deployments | Supports up to 10 SFF drives or up to 20 EDSFF drives in supported configurations. It can also support front OCP 3.0 options or an NS204i hot-plug boot device depending on the selected layout. |
| HPE DL320 Gen12 4LFF | Compact capacity workloads, branch storage, backup and file services | Supports 4 LFF SAS/SATA drives. It is useful when 3.5-inch HDD capacity is required in a compact 1U platform without moving to a larger 12LFF chassis. |
| HPE DL320 Gen12 12LFF | Large local capacity, backup repositories and archive storage | Supports up to 12 LFF SAS/SATA drives and up to 288 TB with 12 × 24 TB HDDs in supported configurations. This chassis requires a 1200 mm depth rack for proper mounting. |
| HPE DL320 Gen12 GPU CTO server | AI inference, VDI graphics, rendering, HPC acceleration and GPU-enabled edge workloads | Supports up to 4 single-wide GPUs or 2 double-wide GPUs, with SFF or EDSFF drive cage options. GPU configurations require careful CPU, PCIe lane, riser, power and cooling validation. |
| HPE DL320 Gen12 U.2 / U.3 / EDSFF NVMe configurations | Low-latency databases, high-IO virtualization, analytics and flash-focused infrastructure | Selected SFF configurations support U.2 or U.3 NVMe, while EDSFF configurations can scale to 20 EDSFF NVMe drives. Final support depends on chassis, backplane, cabling, risers, controller, PCIe lane availability and fan kit. |
For capacity workloads, LFF configurations are usually the practical starting point. For application responsiveness, virtualization datastores and high-IO workloads, SFF SSD, U.2/U.3 NVMe or EDSFF NVMe configurations should be considered. NVMe and EDSFF support should not be assumed from the server model name alone; it depends on the exact chassis, backplane, drive cage, cabling, controller, risers and CTO configuration.
Final drive compatibility depends on the selected chassis, backplane, storage controller, cables, risers, cooling configuration, power supply choice and HPE support matrix.
Recommended HPE ProLiant Compute DL320 Gen12 configurations by workload
| Workload | Recommended focus |
|---|---|
| Edge / branch infrastructure | Right-sized Intel Xeon 6 CPU, DDR5 memory, compact storage, OCP or PCIe networking and remote management through HPE iLO 7. |
| Virtualization / private cloud | High-core Intel Xeon 6 processor, enough DDR5 RAM for VM density, SSD or NVMe storage where needed and redundant networking. |
| Containers / Kubernetes / IaaS | Balanced CPU and RAM, reliable boot media, fast local SSD where needed and network bandwidth sized for cluster traffic. |
| Databases / data management | CPU matched to query profile, enough RAM for cache, low-latency SSD or NVMe storage and protected local arrays. |
| Backup / archive | 4LFF or 12LFF chassis, capacity HDDs, moderate CPU/RAM and network throughput sized for backup and restore windows. |
| Software-defined storage / HCI | Drive layout, tri-mode controller, HBA/JBOD strategy, network bandwidth and CPU/RAM sized for the selected SDS platform. |
| GPU-accelerated workloads | Validated GPU model, Rich I/O CPU where required, risers, power cables, fan kit, thermal limits and memory sizing checked before purchase. |
| Mixed enterprise workloads | Balanced CPU, RAM, storage and NIC choices, with headroom for maintenance, backup, failover and future growth. |
The HPE DL320 Gen12 configuration should be chosen around the main reason for selecting this 1U single-socket platform: right-sized compute, DDR5 memory, PCIe Gen5 expansion, flexible SFF/LFF/EDSFF storage, GPU options, OCP 3.0 networking and HPE iLO 7 management.
How to choose CPU, RAM, RAID and storage
HPE ProLiant Compute DL320 Gen12 supports Intel Xeon 6 Efficient-core and Performance-core processors. E-core CPUs can provide very high core density, with options up to 144 cores, while P-core CPUs can be better for workloads that need stronger per-core performance. Rich I/O processor options may be required for configurations that need enough PCIe lanes for GPUs, front OCP slots or selected drive cage layouts.
RAM planning should start with VM density, database cache, container scheduling, memory-centric workloads and future growth. HPE DL320 Gen12 supports 16 DDR5 RDIMM slots, 8 memory channels and up to 2 DIMMs per channel. Maximum memory capacity is up to 4 TB with 16 × 256 GB RDIMM. Memory speed can reach 6400 MT/s at 1 DIMM per channel and 5200 MT/s at 2 DIMMs per channel, depending on CPU, DIMM type and population.
For RAID and boot planning, the NS204i-u v2 boot device can provide two 480 GB M.2 NVMe SSDs with hardware RAID 1 and can be installed in front, rear or internal locations depending on the configuration. Intel VROC supports up to 8 direct-attached NVMe bays and RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 depending on licensing, but it is disabled by default. For SAS, SATA, larger arrays or tri-mode designs, use supported HPE MR Gen11 controllers such as MR216i, MR408i, MR416i or MR932i.
For storage, LFF HDDs are capacity-oriented and suitable for backup, archive and file services. SFF SSDs are better for application responsiveness and mixed virtualization workloads. U.2/U.3 NVMe and EDSFF NVMe are better for latency-sensitive databases, high-IO virtualization and analytics, but only when the selected chassis, backplane, risers, cables, controller and fan kit support the required drive type.
