HPE ProLiant Compute DL360 Gen12 overview
HPE ProLiant Compute DL360 Gen12 is a compact 1U, dual-socket rack server for enterprise and hybrid cloud workloads that need strong compute performance, high DDR5 memory density, PCIe Gen5 expansion and flexible SFF, LFF or EDSFF storage. As an HPE DL360 Gen12 1U rack server, it is based on Intel Xeon 6 processors, HPE DDR5 Smart Memory and HPE iLO 7 management.
The HPE ProLiant Compute DL360 Gen12 server is suitable for virtualization, VDI, containers, databases, cloud infrastructure, content delivery, EDA, CAD, edge acceleration, intelligent video analytics, software-defined storage, backup infrastructure and selected GPU-accelerated workloads. It should be treated as a high-density enterprise platform, not as an entry-level rack server. Compared with previous DL360 generations, Gen12 brings Intel Xeon 6 processor options, DDR5 memory up to 6400 MT/s, PCIe Gen5 I/O, iLO 7, OCP 3.0 networking flexibility, EDSFF NVMe options and updated HPE management capabilities.
When to choose HPE ProLiant Compute DL360 Gen12
Choose HPE ProLiant Compute DL360 Gen12 when the workload needs a compact 1U dual-socket Intel platform with high compute density, large memory capacity and modern PCIe Gen5 I/O. It is a good fit for virtualization clusters, private cloud nodes, container platforms, business applications, database servers, VDI, HPC, analytics, CDN, edge acceleration and infrastructure roles where CPU, RAM, storage and network options must be balanced carefully.
Compared with a single-socket 1U server such as HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen12, the HPE DL360 Gen12 provides higher CPU and memory scale with support for up to two Intel Xeon 6 processors and up to 8 TB of DDR5 memory. Compared with a 2U platform such as HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen12, it uses less rack space and is better suited to dense compute deployments where maximum local storage expansion is not the main requirement.
The HPE DL360 Gen12 configuration should be validated carefully for processor type, memory population, chassis type, drive cage layout, backplane, storage controller, risers, OCP or PCIe networking, power supplies, fans and cooling. This is especially important for 10SFF/20EDSFF hybrid, 8SFF + 2SFF, 4LFF, U.2/U.3 NVMe, EDSFF NVMe, NS204i-u boot, GPU, high-speed Ethernet, InfiniBand, closed-loop liquid cooling and direct liquid cooling configurations. If the project requires more local storage and 2U expansion, compare with HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen12; if it requires AMD EPYC density, compare with HPE ProLiant DL365 Gen11.
Chassis and drive bay options
HPE ProLiant Compute DL360 Gen12 supports several 1U chassis and drive bay layouts. The right option depends on whether the server is being configured for dense compute, balanced virtualization, SSD storage, NVMe performance, compact HDD capacity, boot separation, VDI graphics or high-speed networking.
| Chassis option | Best for | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| HPE DL360 Gen12 10SFF / 20EDSFF Hybrid | High-density NVMe storage, flash-oriented workloads and flexible front-cage designs | Supports multi-purpose front cages with up to 10 SFF drives or up to 20 E3.S EDSFF NVMe drives in supported configurations. Front OCP NIC and front RAID1 OS boot options depend on the selected layout. |
| HPE DL360 Gen12 8SFF | Virtualization, business applications, databases and SSD-focused workloads | Supports 8 SFF drive bays with U.3 tri-mode options depending on controller and backplane selection. It can be combined with an optional 2SFF cage or Universal Media Bay in supported configurations. |
| HPE DL360 Gen12 8SFF + 2SFF | Higher SFF density, boot separation, cache, logs and compact SSD storage | The optional 2SFF side-by-side cage can increase the front drive count to 10 SFF. It requires the 8SFF L-shaped backplane for power connection. |
| HPE DL360 Gen12 4LFF | Compact capacity workloads, branch storage, backup and file services | Supports 4 LFF SAS/SATA drives. A hardware controller is required for SAS or SATA drives, and capacity remains more limited than in 2U LFF platforms. |
| HPE DL360 Gen12 U.2 / U.3 / EDSFF NVMe configurations | Low-latency databases, high-IO virtualization, analytics and flash-focused infrastructure | Selected SFF configurations support U.2 or U.3 NVMe, while EDSFF configurations can scale to 20 E3.S NVMe drives. Final support depends on chassis, backplane, drive cage, controller, cables, risers and fan kit. |
| HPE DL360 Gen12 GPU and high-speed networking configurations | VDI graphics, AI inference, HPC acceleration, 100/200/400GbE and InfiniBand | Supports selected low-profile single-wide GPU options, including NVIDIA L4. GPU, high-speed Ethernet and InfiniBand configurations require careful validation of risers, fan kit, power, DIMMs, cooling solution and inlet temperature. |
For balanced enterprise workloads, 8SFF configurations are usually the practical starting point. For latency-sensitive databases, virtualization datastores and high-IO workloads, U.2, U.3 or EDSFF NVMe should be considered. For compact capacity workloads, 4LFF can be useful, but it should not be treated as a replacement for a 2U storage-focused platform.
Final drive compatibility depends on the selected chassis, backplane, drive cage, storage controller, cables, risers, cooling configuration, power supply choice and HPE support matrix.
Recommended HPE ProLiant Compute DL360 Gen12 configurations by workload
| Workload | Recommended focus |
|---|---|
| Virtualization / private cloud | Balanced dual-socket Intel Xeon 6 configuration, large DDR5 memory pool, SSD or NVMe where needed, redundant networking and suitable controller choice. |
| VDI | High RAM density, predictable CPU performance, fast storage and validated GPU options when graphics acceleration is required. |
| Containers / Kubernetes | Balanced CPU and RAM, reliable boot media, fast local SSD where needed and network bandwidth sized for cluster traffic. |
| Databases / data management | CPU matched to licensing and query profile, enough RAM for cache, low-latency SSD or NVMe storage and protected local arrays. |
| HPC / EDA / CAD | High-core or high-frequency Intel Xeon 6 CPUs, balanced memory population, PCIe Gen5 networking and validated accelerator options. |
| Backup / compact storage | 4LFF for compact HDD capacity or 8SFF/10SFF for SSD repositories, with network throughput sized for backup and restore windows. |
| Software-defined storage / HCI | Drive layout, tri-mode controller, HBA/JBOD strategy, network bandwidth and CPU/RAM sized for the selected SDS platform. |
| Mixed enterprise workloads | Balanced CPU, RAM, storage and NIC choices, with headroom for failover, maintenance, backup and growth. |
The HPE DL360 Gen12 configuration should be chosen around the main reason for selecting this 1U enterprise platform: high rack density, dual-socket Intel Xeon 6 compute, DDR5 memory capacity, PCIe Gen5 expansion, flexible SFF/LFF/EDSFF storage, OCP 3.0 networking, GPU options and HPE iLO 7 management.
How to choose CPU, RAM, RAID and storage
HPE ProLiant Compute DL360 Gen12 supports up to two Intel Xeon 6 processors, including Efficient-core and Performance-core options. E-core CPUs can provide very high core density, up to 144 cores per CPU, while P-core CPUs can be better for workloads that need stronger per-core performance. Processor choice should also account for software licensing, power envelope, cooling solution and whether the configuration requires high-speed networking, GPU, NVMe or liquid cooling.
RAM planning should start with VM density, database cache, container scheduling, memory-centric workloads and future growth. HPE DL360 Gen12 supports 32 DDR5 RDIMM slots, 16 DIMM slots per processor, 8 memory channels per processor and up to 2 DIMMs per channel. Maximum memory capacity is up to 8 TB with 32 × 256 GB RDIMM. Memory speed can reach 6400 MT/s at 1 DIMM per channel and 5200 MT/s at 2 DIMMs per channel at launch, depending on CPU, DIMM type and population.
For boot planning, NS204i-u v2 can provide two M.2 NVMe SSDs with hardware RAID 1 and can be installed at the front, rear or internally depending on the selected chassis. Intel VROC supports direct-attached NVMe RAID scenarios in UEFI mode, but support and licensing must be validated for the operating system. For SAS, SATA, larger arrays or tri-mode designs, use supported HPE MR Gen11 controllers such as MR216i, MR408i, MR416i or MR932i.
For storage, SFF SSDs are suitable for application responsiveness and mixed virtualization workloads, while LFF HDDs are useful for compact capacity roles. U.2/U.3 NVMe and EDSFF NVMe are better for latency-sensitive databases, high-IO virtualization and analytics, but only when the selected chassis, backplane, risers, cables, controller and fan kit support the required drive type.
