HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11 overview
HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11 is a powerful 4U, dual-socket tower server with rack conversion capability for enterprise, SMB, remote office and branch office workloads that need a strong balance of compute performance, memory capacity, storage flexibility and PCIe Gen5 expansion. As an HPE ML350 Gen11 tower server, it is based on 4th or 5th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, DDR5 Smart Memory and HPE iLO 6 management.
The HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11 server is suitable for virtualization, VDI, containers, databases, data management, file services, software-defined storage, backup infrastructure, internal LTO tape workflows and selected GPU-accelerated workloads. It should be treated as a flexible dual-socket enterprise tower platform, not as a narrow-purpose or entry-level office server. Compared with previous ML350 generations, Gen11 brings a newer processor platform, DDR5 memory, PCIe Gen5 I/O, U.3 NVMe and EDSFF storage options, updated HPE management capabilities and stronger accelerator support.
When to choose HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11
Choose HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11 when the workload needs a tower server with dual-socket compute, large memory capacity, flexible local storage and room for long-term expansion. It is a good fit for virtualization clusters, departmental private cloud nodes, container platforms, business applications, database servers, analytics systems, backup repositories and infrastructure roles where compute, RAM, storage and network options must be balanced carefully.
Compared with a smaller tower server such as HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11, the HPE ML350 Gen11 gives more physical space for drives, PCIe cards, second processor expansion, GPU options, airflow and serviceability. This can be useful when local storage, accelerator support or long-term configuration flexibility matters more than minimum acquisition cost or compact tower size.
The HPE ML350 Gen11 configuration should be validated carefully for processor generation, memory population, drive cage layout, storage controller, risers, OCP/NIC cards, power supplies, fans, heatsinks, rack conversion and cooling. This is especially important for second CPU, NVMe, EDSFF, internal LTO, high-TDP CPU, GPU and redundant fan configurations. If the project requires a rack-optimized 2U Intel platform, compare with HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11; if the project requires a smaller tower server, compare with HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11 or HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen11.
Chassis and drive bay options
HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11 supports several chassis and drive bay layouts. The right option depends on whether the server is being configured for balanced virtualization, high-density SSD storage, capacity-oriented HDD storage, NVMe performance, EDSFF flash storage, internal tape or accelerator-heavy workloads.
| Chassis option | Best for | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| HPE ML350 Gen11 8SFF | Virtualization, databases, SSD-based workloads and mixed enterprise services | Starts with an 8 SFF SAS/SATA/x1 NVMe drive cage and can be expanded with additional SFF drive cages in supported configurations. SFF layouts are better for SSD performance, serviceability and mixed storage designs. |
| HPE ML350 Gen11 24SFF | High-density 2.5-inch SSD, SAS/SATA and U.3 NVMe storage | Selected SFF builds can scale up to 24 SFF hot-plug drives with three 8SFF drive cages. Controller, cabling, cooling and drive type should be validated before ordering. |
| HPE ML350 Gen11 4LFF | Capacity-oriented workloads, backup, archive and file services | Starts with 4 LFF SAS/SATA drive bays and can be expanded with optional LFF or SFF cages. Mixed SFF and LFF drive cages are supported with the LFF chassis in selected configurations. |
| HPE ML350 Gen11 12LFF | Large local capacity, backup repositories and file services | Selected LFF builds can scale up to 12 LFF drives with three 4LFF drive cages. This is useful when 3.5-inch HDD capacity is more important than maximum IOPS. |
| HPE ML350 Gen11 EDSFF NVMe configurations | High-performance NVMe storage and dense flash-oriented configurations | Selected SFF CTO configurations can support a 12 EDSFF x4 NVMe drive cage. Final drive count and compatibility depend on the exact CTO model, drive cage, controller or direct attach design, cabling and cooling. |
| HPE ML350 Gen11 internal LTO and GPU-capable configurations | Local backup, tape workflows, VDI graphics, AI inference and accelerator-supported applications | The platform supports up to one internal LTO tape drive and selected NVIDIA accelerators such as L4, A16, L40, L40S and RTX A1000. Final support depends on risers, power cables, fan kits, drive cages, processor TDP and inlet temperature limits. |
For capacity workloads, LFF configurations are usually the practical starting point. For latency-sensitive databases, virtualization datastores and high-IO workloads, SFF SSD, U.3 NVMe or EDSFF NVMe configurations should be considered. NVMe and EDSFF support should not be assumed from the server model name alone; it depends on the exact chassis, drive cage, backplane, cabling, controller and CTO configuration.
Final drive compatibility depends on the selected chassis, backplane, storage controller, cables, risers, cooling configuration and HPE support matrix.
Recommended HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11 configurations by workload
| Workload | Recommended focus |
|---|---|
| Virtualization / private cloud | Balanced dual-socket CPU configuration, large DDR5 memory pool, SSD or NVMe storage where needed, redundant networking and room for future RAM expansion. |
| VDI | High RAM density, predictable CPU performance, fast storage and validated GPU options when graphics acceleration is required. |
| Containers / Kubernetes | Balanced CPU and RAM, reliable boot media, fast local SSD where needed and redundant network connectivity for cluster traffic. |
| Databases / data management | Processor choice matched to licensing and query profile, enough RAM for cache, low-latency SSD, U.3 NVMe or EDSFF storage and protected storage design. |
| Backup / archive | 4LFF or expanded LFF chassis, capacity HDDs, optional internal LTO and network throughput sized for backup windows and restore requirements. |
| Software-defined storage / HCI | Drive layout, Intel VROC, HBA/JBOD or controller mode, network bandwidth and CPU/RAM sized for the selected SDS platform. |
| GPU-accelerated workloads | Validated GPU model, risers, power cables, redundant fan kit, second CPU fan kit, external GPU fan options, cooling limits and memory sizing checked before purchase. |
| Mixed enterprise workloads | Balanced CPU, RAM, storage and NIC choices, with headroom for failover, maintenance, storage growth and future expansion. |
The HPE ML350 Gen11 configuration should be chosen around the main reason for selecting a powerful tower server: dual-socket compute, flexible storage, DDR5 memory capacity, PCIe Gen5 expansion, tower serviceability and optional rack deployment.
How to choose CPU, RAM, RAID and storage
HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11 supports 4th and 5th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors depending on the selected server configuration. Higher core counts help virtualization, containers, VDI and multi-user services, while higher clock speed can matter for databases and applications that are sensitive to per-core performance. Processor choice should also account for software licensing, especially for VMware, Windows Server, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle and other commercial platforms.
Do not treat 4th Gen and 5th Gen Intel Xeon configurations as freely interchangeable. HPE notes that field upgrade from 4th Generation Intel Xeon processors to 5th Generation Intel Xeon processors is not supported on this platform. If a 5th Gen Xeon build is required, confirm the processor generation and system board at the time of purchase. Processors with TDP equal to or greater than 195W require the performance heatsink, while processors with TDP equal to or greater than 300W require both the redundant fan kit and the second CPU fan kit.
RAM planning should start with VM density, database cache requirements, container scheduling, failover design and future growth. HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11 supports HPE DDR5 Smart Memory with up to 32 DIMM slots, 16 DIMM slots per processor, 8 memory channels per processor and up to 2 DIMMs per channel. Maximum memory capacity can reach up to 8 TB with 32 × 256 GB RDIMM in supported two-processor configurations. If only one processor is installed, only half of the DIMM slots are available, so the final memory layout should be validated before ordering.
Intel VROC SATA and Intel VROC NVMe can be used for selected storage designs, but OS support, licensing and driver requirements should be checked. Intel VROC SATA supports RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 for supported SATA storage and is disabled by default. Intel VROC NVMe can support RAID for direct-attached NVMe SSDs when the required license is ordered. Hardware RAID is appropriate for classic server deployments with protected local arrays. HBA or JBOD mode is usually preferred for ZFS, Ceph, VMware vSAN, Proxmox/ZFS and other software-defined storage platforms when the software layer manages disks directly.
For storage, LFF HDDs are capacity-oriented and suitable for backup, archive and file services. SFF SSDs are better for application responsiveness and mixed virtualization workloads. U.3 NVMe and EDSFF options are better for latency-sensitive databases, high-IO virtualization and analytics, but only when the exact chassis, drive cage, backplane and CTO configuration support the required drive type. HPE boot options such as NS204i-u can separate OS or hypervisor boot from the main data drives.
HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11 vs related HPE models
| Model | When to consider |
|---|---|
| HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11 | Choose ML110 Gen11 when a single-socket tower platform is enough and the project prioritizes lower platform cost, simpler expansion and smaller tower deployment. |
| HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen11 | Choose ML30 Gen11 for entry tower SMB, ROBO, POS, file/print and light infrastructure workloads. |
| HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11 | Choose DL380 Gen11 when a 2U Intel rack platform is preferred for rack density, standardized data center deployment and broad configuration flexibility. |
| HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen11 | Choose DL385 Gen11 when a 2U AMD EPYC platform is required for AMD-based standardization, high core count or memory bandwidth requirements. |
| HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen10 | Consider ML350 Gen10 when a previous-generation DDR4 and PCIe Gen3/Gen4-era tower platform is sufficient and acquisition cost is the main priority. |
HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11 is the right reference point when the requirement is an Intel-based HPE Gen11 dual-socket tower server with broad configuration flexibility. It is not the same platform as ML350 Gen10 and should not be described only as a minor refresh.
