HPE ProLiant Compute DL380 Gen12 overview
HPE ProLiant Compute DL380 Gen12 is a versatile 2U, dual-socket rack server for enterprise and hybrid cloud workloads that need strong compute performance, high DDR5 memory capacity, PCIe Gen5 expansion and broad SFF, LFF or EDSFF storage flexibility. As an HPE DL380 Gen12 2U rack server, it is based on Intel Xeon 6 processors, HPE DDR5 Smart Memory and HPE iLO 7 management.
The HPE ProLiant Compute DL380 Gen12 server is suitable for virtualization, VDI, containers, databases, data management, private cloud, software-defined storage, backup infrastructure, SAP solutions, AI-driven workloads, high-performance computing and GPU-accelerated workloads. It should be treated as a flexible mainstream enterprise platform, not as an entry-level rack server. Compared with previous DL380 generations, Gen12 brings Intel Xeon 6 processor options, DDR5 memory up to 6400 MT/s, PCIe Gen5 I/O, iLO 7, OCP 3.0 networking flexibility, EDSFF NVMe options and updated HPE management capabilities.
When to choose HPE ProLiant Compute DL380 Gen12
Choose HPE ProLiant Compute DL380 Gen12 when the workload needs a standard 2U dual-socket Intel platform with room for storage, memory growth, PCIe cards, accelerators and long-term serviceability. It is a good fit for virtualization clusters, private cloud nodes, container platforms, business applications, database servers, analytics systems, backup repositories, VDI, SAP and infrastructure roles where CPU, RAM, storage and network options must be balanced carefully.
Compared with a 1U server such as HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen12, the HPE DL380 Gen12 gives more physical space for drives, PCIe cards, GPU options, airflow, rear drive options and service access. This can be useful when local storage, accelerator support or long-term configuration flexibility matters more than maximum rack density.
The HPE DL380 Gen12 configuration should be validated carefully for processor type, memory population, chassis type, drive cage layout, backplane, storage controller, risers, OCP or PCIe networking, power supplies, fans and cooling. This is especially important for 24SFF, 12LFF, 36EDSFF, U.2/U.3 NVMe, EDSFF NVMe, rear-drive, mid-tray, GPU, high-speed Ethernet, InfiniBand, closed-loop liquid cooling and direct liquid cooling configurations. If the project requires a denser 1U Intel platform, compare with HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen12; if AMD EPYC is preferred, compare with HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen11.
Chassis and drive bay options
HPE ProLiant Compute DL380 Gen12 supports several 2U chassis and drive bay layouts. The right option depends on whether the server is being configured for balanced virtualization, high-density SSD storage, capacity-oriented HDD storage, NVMe performance, backup, software-defined storage or accelerator-heavy workloads.
| Chassis option | Best for | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| HPE DL380 Gen12 8SFF | Balanced virtualization, business applications, databases and mixed enterprise workloads | The SFF CTO server can start with selected 8SFF drive cages and can be expanded toward 24 front SFF drives, with Universal Media Bay, multi-purpose cage and up to 6 rear SFF drive options in supported configurations. |
| HPE DL380 Gen12 24SFF | High-density 2.5-inch SAS/SATA SSD, U.3 NVMe and mixed storage | Includes 24 front SFF drives and supports up to 6 rear SFF drives in selected configurations, for up to 30 SFF drives. It is the dense SFF starting point when front storage density matters. |
| HPE DL380 Gen12 8LFF | Capacity workloads, file services, backup and archive | Supports 8 front LFF drives, optional 2 front SFF drives, 4 LFF midplane options and selected rear LFF or SFF drive options. The 8LFF chassis cannot be upgraded to 12 front LFF in the field. |
| HPE DL380 Gen12 12LFF | Large local capacity, backup repositories and archive storage | Supports 12 front LFF drives, optional 4LFF midplane and selected rear LFF or SFF drive options, up to 20 LFF drives in supported builds. |
| HPE DL380 Gen12 EDSFF configurations | High-performance NVMe storage and dense flash-oriented infrastructure | The EDSFF CTO server can support up to 36 EDSFF front drives, or 12 EDSFF with 16 SFF front drives and up to 2 rear SFF drives in supported configurations. |
| HPE DL380 Gen12 GPU and high-speed networking configurations | VDI graphics, AI inference, HPC, 100/200/400GbE and InfiniBand | Selected NVIDIA GPU and accelerator options are supported. GPU, high-speed Ethernet and InfiniBand builds require careful validation of risers, power, fans, heatsinks, drive layout, cooling method and inlet temperature. |
For capacity workloads, LFF configurations are usually the practical starting point. For latency-sensitive databases, virtualization datastores and high-IO workloads, SFF SSD, U.2/U.3 NVMe or EDSFF NVMe configurations should be considered. NVMe and EDSFF support should not be assumed from the server model name alone; it depends on the exact chassis, backplane, drive cage, cabling, controller, risers and CTO configuration.
Final drive compatibility depends on the selected chassis, backplane, storage controller, cables, risers, cooling configuration, power supply choice and HPE support matrix.
Recommended HPE ProLiant Compute DL380 Gen12 configurations by workload
| Workload | Recommended focus |
|---|---|
| Virtualization / private cloud | Balanced dual-socket Intel Xeon 6 configuration, large DDR5 memory pool, SSD or NVMe where needed, redundant networking and room for future RAM expansion. |
| VDI | High RAM density, predictable CPU performance, fast storage and validated GPU options when graphics acceleration is required. |
| Containers / Kubernetes | Balanced CPU and RAM, reliable boot media, fast local SSD where needed and redundant network connectivity for cluster traffic. |
| Databases / data management | Processor choice matched to licensing and query profile, enough RAM for cache, low-latency SSD or NVMe storage and protected storage design. |
| Backup / archive | 8LFF or 12LFF chassis, capacity HDDs, moderate CPU/RAM and network throughput sized for backup windows and restore requirements. |
| Software-defined storage / HCI | Drive layout, tri-mode controller, HBA/JBOD strategy, network bandwidth and CPU/RAM sized for the selected SDS platform. |
| GPU-accelerated workloads | Validated GPU model, risers, power cables, high-performance fans, cooling method, inlet temperature limits and memory sizing checked before purchase. |
| Mixed enterprise workloads | Balanced CPU, RAM, storage and NIC choices, with headroom for failover, maintenance, backup and growth. |
The HPE DL380 Gen12 configuration should be chosen around the main reason for selecting a 2U enterprise server: flexible storage, strong dual-socket Intel Xeon 6 compute, DDR5 memory capacity, PCIe Gen5 expansion, GPU options, high-speed networking and long-term serviceability.
How to choose CPU, RAM, RAID and storage
HPE ProLiant Compute DL380 Gen12 supports up to two Intel Xeon 6 processors, including Efficient-core and Performance-core options. E-core CPUs can provide very high core density, up to 144 cores per CPU, while P-core CPUs can be better for workloads that need stronger per-core performance, with options up to 86 cores per CPU. Processor choice should also account for software licensing, power envelope, cooling solution, GPU plans, high-speed networking and whether the configuration requires mid-tray or direct liquid cooling.
RAM planning should start with VM density, database cache requirements, container scheduling, failover design and future growth. HPE DL380 Gen12 supports 32 DDR5 RDIMM slots, 16 DIMM slots per processor, 8 memory channels per processor and 2 DIMMs per channel. Maximum memory capacity is up to 8 TB with 32 × 256 GB RDIMM. Memory speed can reach 6400 MT/s at 1 DIMM per channel and 6000 MT/s at 2 DIMMs per channel, depending on CPU, DIMM type and population.
For RAID and boot planning, the server supports Intel VROC, HPE Compute MR Gen11 controllers and HPE NS204i-u v2 NVMe boot options. NS204i-u v2 can be installed at the rear, internally or in the front cage depending on the selected SFF or EDSFF CTO layout. For SAS, SATA, larger arrays, hardware RAID or tri-mode designs, use supported HPE MR Gen11 controllers such as MR216i, MR408i, MR416i or MR932i. The MR932i-p controller supports SAS and NVMe SSDs only and does not support HDDs.
For storage, LFF HDDs are capacity-oriented and are suitable for backup, archive and file services. SFF SSDs are better for application responsiveness and mixed virtualization workloads. U.2/U.3 NVMe and EDSFF NVMe are better for latency-sensitive databases, high-IO virtualization and analytics, but only when the selected chassis, backplane, risers, cables, controller and fan kit support the required drive type.
HPE ProLiant Compute DL380 Gen12 vs related HPE models
| Model | When to consider |
|---|---|
| HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen12 | Choose DL360 Gen12 when 1U density is more important than maximum local storage, PCIe expansion, GPU flexibility or 2U serviceability. |
| HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen12 | Choose DL320 Gen12 when a single-socket Intel 1U platform is enough and lower platform complexity matters more than dual-socket scale. |
| HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11 | Choose DL380 Gen11 when a previous-generation DDR5 and PCIe Gen5 platform is sufficient and acquisition cost is the main priority. |
| HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen11 | Choose DL385 Gen11 when a 2U AMD EPYC platform is preferred for high core count, memory bandwidth or AMD-based infrastructure standards. |
| HPE ProLiant DL365 Gen11 | Consider DL365 Gen11 when a 1U AMD EPYC platform is preferred for dense compute or AMD-based standardization. |
